Find: i) 12 ÷ 3/4 ii) 14 ÷ 5/6 iii) 8 ÷ 7/3
iv) 4 ÷ 8/3 v) 3 ÷ \(2{\Large\frac{1}{3}}\) vi) 5 ÷ \(3{\Large\frac{4}{7}}\)
To divide a fraction, we will find the reciprocal of the second fraction and then multiply the fraction with the reciprocal. If one number is a whole number then we will convert it into a fraction by using 1 as the denominator.
Solution:
(i)12 ÷3/4
= 12/1 × 4/3
= (12 × 4)/3
= 48/3
= 16
(ii) 14 ÷ 5/6
= 14/1 × 6/5
= (14 × 6)/5
= 84/5 (improper fraction)
Converting into mixed fraction, we get:
84/5 = \(16{\Large\frac{4}{5}}\)
(iii) 8 ÷ 7/3
= 8/1 × (3/7)
= (8 × 3)/7
= 24/7 (improper fraction)
Converting into mixed fraction, we get
24/7 = \(3{\Large\frac{3}{7}}\)
(iv) 4 ÷ 8/3
= 4/1 × 3/8
= (4 × 3)/8
= 12/8 (By reducing to its lowest term)
= 3/2 (improper fraction)
Converting into mixed fraction, we get
3/2 = \(1{\Large\frac{1}{2}}\)
(v) 3 ÷ \(2{\Large\frac{1}{3}}\)
= 3 ÷ 7/3
= 3/1 × 3/7
= (3 × 3)/7
= 9/7 ( improper fraction )
Converting into mixed fraction, we get
9/7 = \(1{\Large\frac{2}{7}}\)
(vi) 5 ÷ \(3{\Large\frac{4}{7}}\)
= 5 ÷ 25/7
= 5/1 × 7/25 (By simplifying the fraction)
= (5 × 7)/25
= 7/5 (improper fraction)
Converting into mixed fraction, we get
7/5 = \(1{\Large\frac{2}{5}}\)
