We have to find a single machine.
We know that, when two machines are hooked up their stretching power is multiplied.
Stretching power = (× 2³) × (× 2⁻²)
2³ = 2 × 2 × 2
= 4 × 2
= 8
Using the law of exponents,
a⁻ⁿ = 1/aⁿ
2⁻² = 1/2²
= 1/4
Stretching power = 8 × 1/4
= 8/4
= 2
We observe that (× 2¹) does the same work as a (× 2³) machine followed by (× 2⁻²) machine.
