Express the following number in standard form: 24 billion
Solution:
Given, the number is 24 billion
We have to express the number in standard form.
Any number can be expressed as a decimal number between 1.0 and 10.0 including 1.0 multiplied by a power of 10.
Such a form of a number is called its standard form or scientific notation.
For standard form,
24 billion = 24,00,00,00,000
= 24 × 10⁹
= 2.4 × 10 × 10⁹
Considering 10 × 10⁹,
For any non-zero integers ‘a’ and ‘b’ and whole numbers m and n,
am × an = am + n
Here, a = 10, m = 1 and n = 9
m + n = 1 + 9
= 10
10 × 10⁹ = 10¹⁰
So, 24 billion = 2.4 × 10¹⁰
Therefore, the required value is 2.4 × 10¹⁰.
