Express the following in the form p/q , where p and q are integers and q ≠ 0 : 0.2555
Solution:
Given, the number is 0.2555
We have to express the number in p/q form.
A recurring decimal is a decimal representation of a number whose digits are repeating its values at regular intervals.
The infinitely repeated portion is not zero.
Let x = 0.2555 -------- (1)
Multiplying by 10 both sides,
10x = 10(0.2555)
10x = 2.555 --------- (2)
Multiplying by 10 both sides,
100x = 100(0.2555)
100x = 25.555 --------- (3)
On subtracting (2) and (3),
100x - 10x = 25.555 - 2.555
90x = 23
Therefore, x = 23/90
✦ Try This: Express 0.777 in the form p/q
Given, the number is 0.777
We have to express the number in p/q form.
A recurring decimal is a decimal representation of a number whose digits are repeating its values at regular intervals.
The infinitely repeated portion is not zero.
Let x = 0.777 -------- (1)
Multiplying by 10 both sides,
10x = 10(0.777)
10x = 7.777 --------- (2)
On subtracting (1) and (2),
10x - x = 7.777 - 0.777
9x = 7.0000
x = 7/9
Therefore, x = 7/9
