Express each of the following in standard form: Express 56 km in m.
Solution:
Given, 56 km
We have to write in standard form.
Any number can be expressed as decimal numbers between 1 and 10 multiplied by a power of 10. This form of representation is termed as the standard form.
We know, 1 km = 1000 m
So, 56 km = 56 × 1000
= 5.6 × 10¹ × 10³
Using law of exponents,
am × an = am + n
Here, a = 10
m = 1
n = 3
So, m + n = 1 + 3
= 4
10¹ × 10³ = 10⁴
So, 5.6 × 10¹ × 10³ = 5.6 × 10⁴
Therefore, the required standard from is 5.6 × 10⁴ m.
