Express each of the following in standard form: Express 5 tons in g.
Solution:
Given, 5 tons.
We have to write in standard form.
Any number can be expressed as decimal numbers between 1 and 10 multiplied by a power of 10. This form of representation is termed as the standard form.
We know, 1 ton = 100 kg
1 kg = 1000 gm
So, 5 tons = 5 × 100 × 1000
= 5 × 10² × 10³
Using law of exponents,
am × an = am + n
Here, a = 10
m = 2
n = 3
So, m + n = 2 + 3
= 5
10² × 10³ = 10⁵
So, 5 × 10² × 10³ = 5 × 10⁵
Therefore, the required standard form is 5 × 10⁵ gm.
