Express each of the following in standard form: Express 5 hectares in cm² (1 hectare = 10000 m²)
Solution:
Given, 5 hectares
We have to write in standard form.
Any number can be expressed as decimal numbers between 1 and 10 multiplied by a power of 10. This form of representation is termed as the standard form.
Given, 1 hectare = 10000 m²
We know, 1 m = 100 cm
So, 1 m² = 10000 cm²
Now, 5 hectares = 5 × 10000 × 10000
= 5 × 10⁴ × 10⁴
Using law of exponents,
am × an = am + n
Here, a = 10
m = 4
n = 4
So, m + n = 4 + 4
= 8
10⁴ × 10⁴ = 10⁸
So, 5 × 10⁴ × 10⁴ = 5 × 10⁸
Therefore, the required standard form is 5 × 10⁸ cm².
