Express each of the following in standard form: Express 2 years in seconds.
Solution:
Given, 2 years.
We have to write in standard form.
Any number can be expressed as decimal numbers between 1 and 10 multiplied by a power of 10. This form of representation is termed as the standard form.
We know, 1 year = 365 days
1 day = 24 hours
1 hour = 60 minutes
1 minute = 60 seconds
So, 2 years = 2 × 365 × 24 × 60 × 60
= 63072000 seconds
= 63072 × 10³
= 6.3072 × 10⁴ × 10³
Using law of exponents,
am × an = am + n
Here, a = 10
m = 4
n = 3
So, m + n = 4 + 3
= 7
10⁴ × 10³ = 10⁷
So, 6.3072 × 10⁴ × 10³ = 6.3072 × 10⁷
Therefore, the required standard form is 6.3072 × 10⁷ seconds.
