Explain the situations represented by the following distance-time graphs.
Solution:
Graph (a): The graph indicates that with increase in time the distance increases at a constant rate.In other words, if the graph represents a vehicle it means that it covers distance at a constant rate.
Graph (b): The graph indicates that for some time the distance covered increases with time but after some time there is no increase in distance covered with time. If this graph represents the distance-time graph of a vehicle then the vehicle comes to a halt after some time.
Graph (c) The graph indicates that there is a rapid increase in distance with time initially. Then after some time the distance covered increases at a lesser rate than before. Finally there is no increase in distance covered with time. If this graph represents a vehicle it means that vehicle comes to a halt after some time.
✦ Try This: Explain the situations represented by the following distance-time graphs.
Graph (a): The graph indicates that the distance covered with time does not change. That means that no additional distance is covered with time.
Graph(b): The graph indicates that initially the distance covered increases and afterwards the distance covered decreases with time till the time distance covered is zero.
Graph (c): Initially distance increases slowly with time and suddenly the distance covered increases very rapidly
