Each symbol given below represents an algebraic expression: 2x² + 3y, 5x² + 3x, 8y² - 3x² + 2x + 3y
Find the expression which is represented by the above symbols
Solution:
Given, triangle symbol = 2x² + 3y
Circle symbol = 5x² + 3x
Square symbol = 8y² - 3x² + 2x + 3y
We have to find the value of the expression triangle symbol + circle symbol - square symbol.
Triangle symbol + circle symbol = 2x² + 3y + (5x² + 3x)
= 2x² + 3y + 5x² + 3x
By combining like terms,
= 2x² + 5x² + 3x + 3y
= (2 + 5)x² + 3x + 3y
= 7x² + 3x + 3y
Now, triangle symbol + circle symbol - square symbol = 7x² + 3x + 3y - (8y² - 3x² + 2x + 3y)
= 7x² + 3x + 3y - 8y² + 3x² - 2x - 3y
By combining like terms,
= 7x² + 3x² - 8y² + 3x - 2x + 3y - 3y
By distributive property,
= (7 + 3)x² - 8y² + (3 - 2)x + (3 - 3)y
= (10)x² - 8y² + (1)x + (0)y
Therefore, the required expression is 10x² - 8y² + x.
