Each of the 2 equal sides of an isosceles triangle is twice as large as the third side. If the perimeter of the triangle is 30 cm, find the length of each side of the triangle
Solution:
Let the length of the third side be x.
Then the length of each of the 2 equal sides of the triangle be 2x.
Hence the perimeter of the triangle be (2x + 2x + x) cm.
A/Q
(2x + 2x + x) = 30
5x = 30
x = 30/5
x = 6
Hence, 2x = 12
Thus, the length of each side of the triangle are 6 cm, 12 cm and 12 cm.
✦ Try This: Each of the 2 equal sides of an isosceles triangle is thrice as large as the third side. If the perimeter of the triangle is 84 cm, find the length of each side of the triangle.
Let the length of the third side be x.
Then the length of each of the 2 equal sides of the triangle be 3x.
Hence the perimeter of the triangle be (3x + 3x + x) cm.
A/Q
(3x + 3x + x) = 84
7x = 84
x = 84/7
x = 12
Hence, 3x = 36
Thus, the length of each side of the triangle are 12 cm, 36 cm and 36 cm.
