Determine the following polynomials has x - 2 a factor : 4x² + x - 2
Solution:
Given, the polynomial is p(x) = 4x² + x - 2
We have to determine if x - 2 is a factor of p(x).
Given, g(x) = x - 2
Let g(x) = 0
x - 2 = 0
x = 2
Substitute x = 2 in p(x),
p(2) = 4(2)² + (2) - 2
= 4(4) + 2 - 2
= 16
p(2) = 16
Since p(x) is not equal to 0 when x = 2, x - 2 is not a factor of p(x)
Therefore, x-2 is not a factor of 4x² + x - 2.
