Arrange the following in descending order: (i) 2/9, 2/3, 8/21 (ii) 1/5, 3/7, 7/10
Solution:
Convert the given fractions into like fractions so that all of them have the same denominator. Now the fractions can be easily arranged into descending order by comparing their numerators.
(i) 2/9, 2/3, 8/21
Converting them into like fractions, we get
= (2 × 7)/(9 × 7), (2 × 21)/(3 × 21), (8 × 3)/(21 × 3)
= 14/63, 42/63, 24/63
Arranging in descending order
42/63 > 24/63 > 14/63
Therefore,
2/3, 8/21, 2/9 are in the descending order
(ii) 1/5, 3/7, 7/10
Converting them into like fractions, we get
= (1 × 14)/(5 × 14), (3 × 10)/(7 × 10), (7 × 7)/(10 × 7)
= 14/70, 30/70, 49/70,
Arranging in descending order
49/70 > 30/70 > 14/70
Therefore,
7/10, 3/7, 1/5 are in the descending order
