Ajita starts off from home at 07.00 hours with her father on a scooter that goes at a uniform speed of 30 km/h and drops her at her school after half an hour. She stays in the school till 13.30 hours and takes an auto rickshaw to return home. The rickshaw has a uniform speed of 10 km/h. Draw the graph for the above situation and also determine the distance of Ajita’s school from her house.
Solution:
The graph of the above situation will look like as drawn below:
Since the speed the speed of the scooter is 30 km/hour and Ajita gets dropped in half an hour means that distance to school from her home is :
Distance/(1/2 hour) = 30 km/hour
Distance = 30(1/2) = 15 km
Since on return the auto’s speed is 10km/hour the time taken is 15/10 = 1.5 hours or one hour thirty minutes.
✦ Try This: Ajita starts off from home at 07.00 hours with her father on a scooter that goes at a uniform speed of 20 km/h and drops her at her school after one hour. She stays in the school till 13.00 hours and takes an autorickshaw to return home. The rickshaw has a uniform speed of 10 km/h. Draw the graph for the above situation and also determine the distance Ajita’s school from her house.
The graph of the above situation will look like as drawn below:
Since the speed the speed of the scooter is 20 km/hour and Ajita gets dropped in an hour means that distance to school from her home is :
Speed of scooter =20 km/hour
Distance covered in one hour = 20(1) = 20 km
Since on return the auto’s speed is 10km/hour the time taken is 20/10 = 2 hours. Hence she comes back home at 3pm.
