Age (in years) of 6 children of two groups are recorded as below:
Age (In years)
Group A Group B
7 7
7 9
9 11
8 12
10 12
10 12
Find the mode and range for each group.
Solution:
Given, the table represents the age of 6 children of two groups in years.
We have to find the mode and range for each group.
Considering group A,
Arranging the data in ascending order, we get
7, 7, 8, 9, 10, 10
A mode is defined as the value that has a higher frequency in a given set of data.
7 occurs 2 times
10 occurs 2 times
8, 9 occurs one time
Therefore, mode = 7 years and 10 years
We know that the difference between the highest and lowest observations in a given data is called its Range.
Highest observation = 10
Lowest observation = 7
Range = highest observation - lowest observation
= 10 - 7
= 3
Therefore, the range is 3 years.
Considering group B,
Arranging the data in ascending order, we get
7, 9, 11, 12, 12, 12
A mode is defined as the value that has a higher frequency in a given set of data.
7, 9, 11 occurs one time
12 occurs 3 times
Therefore, mode = 12 years
We know that the difference between the highest and lowest observations in a given data is called its Range.
Highest observation = 12
Lowest observation = 7
Range = highest observation - lowest observation
= 12 - 7
= 5
Therefore, the range is 5 years.
