A swimming pool can be filled in 4 hours by 8 pumps of the same type. How many such pumps are required if the pool is to be filled in 2 2/3 hours?
Solution
Number of Pumps Time required to fill a swimming pool
8 4 hours
x = ? 2 2/3 hours
Since the time required to fill the swimming pool is reduced to 2 ⅔ hours the number of pumps required will be more.
x = 8 × (4/(8/3))
x = 8 × (12/8)
x = 12
Therefore 12 pumps will be required to fill the swimming pool in 2 2/3 hours.
✦ Try This: A swimming pool can be filled in 6 hours by 4 pumps of the same type. How many such pumps are required if the pool is to be filled in 3 1/3 hours?
Number of Pumps Time required to fill a swimming pool
4 6 hours
x = ? 3hours
Since the time required to fill the swimming pool is reduced to 3 hours the number of pumps required will be more. Thus the number of pumps and the time required to fill the pool are inversely proportional to each other.
x = 4 × (6/(3))
x = 4 × (6/3)
x = 8
Hence 8 pumps will be required to fill the swimming pool in three hours.
