A river 2 m deep and 45 m wide is flowing at the rate of 3 km per hour. Find the amount of water in cubic metres that runs into the sea per minute.
Solution:
The amount of water which flows into the sea per minute can be calculated as follows:
3Km/hour = 3000/60 m/minute = 50 m/minute
The Volume of water flowing from the river to the sea in a minute = 2m × 45m × 50m/min = 4500m³/min
Hence 4500 cubic metres of water is flowing into the sea per minute.
✦ Try This: A river 1.5 m deep and 36 m wide is flowing at the rate of 2 km per hour. Find the amount of water in cubic metres that runs into the sea per minute.
The amount of water which flows into the sea per minute can be calculated as follows:
2Km/hour = 2000/60 m/minute = 33 1/3 m/minute
The Volume of water flowing from the river to the sea in a minute = 1.5m × 36m × 200/6m = 1800m³
Hence 1800 cubic metres of water is flowing into the sea per minute.
