(a + b) (a - b) = a² - b². Is the given statement true or false
Solution:
Statement is true.
Given, (a + b) (a - b) = a² - b²
LHS = (a + b) (a - b)
By distributive property, we get
= a² + ba - ab - b²
= a² - b²
RHS = a² - b²
LHS = RHS
✦ Try This: Verify the identity (a + b) (a - b) = a² - b², if a = 4 and b = -1
Given standard identity : (a + b) (a - b) = a² - b²
Substituting the given values a = 4 and b = -1
LHS = (a + b) (a - b) = [4 + (-1)] [4 - (-1)] = (4 - 1)(4 + 1) = 3 × 5 = 15
RHS = a² - b² = (4)² - (-1)² = 16 - 1 = 15
LHS = RHS
