The unit digit of a perfect square can be only 0, 1, 4, 5, 6 or 9.

The square of a number having:

2 or 8 at the unit's place ends in 4.

3 or 7 at the unit's place ends at 9.

4 or 6 at the unit's place ends at 6.

5 at the unit's place ends in 5.

From the above statement,

It is clear that a perfect square can have 1, 5, 6 at the unit's place.

Therefore, 8 can never be at the unit's place of a perfect square.
