A mother and her two daughters got a room constructed for Rs. 62,000. The elder daughter contributes 3/8 of her mother’s contribution while the younger daughter contributes 1/2 of her mother’s share. How much do the three contribute individually?
Solution:
Given room was constructed for Rs. 62,000
Let the mother's contribution be x
Applying our knowledge on fractions, we compute as follows.
Elder daughter gets 3/8 of it = 3x/8
Younger daughter gets 1/2 of it = x/2
Total = x + x/2 + 3x/8 = 62,000
(8x + 4x + 3x)/8 = 62,000
15x/8 = 62,000
x = 33,066.66
Thus, the mother contributes Rs.33,066.6, the elder daughter contributes Rs.12,400, and the younger daughter contributes Rs.16,533.
✦ Try This: A mother and her two daughters got a room constructed for Rs. 72,000. The elder daughter contributes 1/4 of her mother’s contribution while the younger daughter contributes 1/3 of her mother’s share. How much do the three contribute individually?
Given room was constructed for Rs. 72,000
Elder daughter gets 1/4 of it = 1/4 × 72,000 = 18,000
Younger daughter gets 1/2 of it = 1/3 × 72,000 = 24,000
Remaining contribution is of the mother = 72,000 - 18,000 - 24,000 = 30,000
Thus, the mother contributes Rs.30,000, the elder daughter contributes Rs.18,000, and the younger daughter contributes Rs.24,000.
