A loaded truck travels 14 km in 25 minutes. If the speed remains the same, how far can it travel in 5 hours?
Solution:
Let the distance be x and the time be y.
Distance | Time in minutes |
14 | 25 |
? | 5 × 60 (1 hour = 60 minutes) |
[For comparison the unit should be same]
In 25 minutes, it travels 14 km. In 5 hours, it will travel more distance. So, it is a case of direct proportion.
Two numbers x and y are said in direct proportion if, the relationship between two quantities is such that if we increase one, the other will also increase, and if we decrease one the other quantity will also decrease.
x/y = k, x = ky
where k is a constant.
Thus, x₁ / y₁ = x₂ / y₂
14 / 25 = x₂ / (5 × 60)
25 x₂ = 5 × 60 × 14
x₂ = (5 × 60 × 14) / 25
x₂ = 168 km
