A contractor undertook a contract to complete a part of a stadium in 9 months with a team of 560 persons. Later on, it was required to complete the job in 5 months. How many extra persons should he employ to complete the work?
Solution:
No. of Persons in the Team Time taken to complete part of the stadium
560 9 months
x = ? 5 months
To complete the job in less time implies that more persons have to be employed. It is an inverse variation.
Therefore:
x = 560 × (9/5)
x = 112 × 9
x = 1008
Therefore 1008 persons will be required to complete the job in 5 months. Therefore additional persons required to do the job will be:
No. of additional persons required = 1008 - 560 = 448
✦ Try This: A contractor undertook a contract to complete a part of a stadium in 12 months with a team of 512 persons. If 256 more people join then how fast will the job be completed?
No. of Persons in the Team Time taken to complete part of the stadium
512 12 months
768 x = ?
To complete the job in less time implies that more persons have to be employed. Therefore:
x = 12 × (512/768)
x = 12 × (2/3)
x = 8 months
Therefore 768 persons will complete the job in 8 months which is 4 months less than the time taken earlier.
