A coin is flipped to decide which team starts the game. What is the probability that your team will start?
Solution:
Probability can be defined as the ratio of the number of favorable outcomes to the total number of outcomes of an event.
A coin has two possible outcomes Head {H} and Tail {T}.
Hence, the total number of outcomes will be 2.
⇒ n(S) = 2
As Probability of getting a head or tail is equal, hence, number of successful outcomes : n(E) = 1
We know that,
Probability = Number of successful outcomes / Total number of outcomes
Therefore, P(Team starts first) = n(E) / n(S)
= 1/2
Thus, the probability that a team will start first is 1/2.
