A bowler throws a cricket ball at a speed of 120 km/h. How long does this ball take to travel a distance of 20 metres to reach the batsman?
Solution:
Speed of the ball = 120 km/hours = 120 × (5/18) metres/second = 33 1/3 m/s
Time taken by the ball to travel 20 metres= 20/33 1/3 seconds = (20/(100/3)) seconds
= 60/100
= 0.6 seconds = 0.01 minutes
✦ Try This: A bowler throws a cricket ball at a speed of 144 km/h. How long does this ball take to travel a distance of 22 yards to reach the batsman?
1 yard = 0.914 metres
22 yards = 22 × 0.914 = 20.12 metres
Speed of the ball = 144 km/hours = 144 × (5/18) metres/second = 40 m/s
Time taken by the ball to travel 20.12 metres = 20.12/40 seconds = 0.503 seconds
= 0.008 minutes
