(a - b)² = a² - b². Is the given statement true or false
Solution:
Given statement is false.
Given, (a - b)² = a² - b²
Here, LHS = (a - b)²
= (a - b) (a - b)
By distributive property, we get
= a² - 2ab + b²
Here, RHS = a² - b²
LHS ≠ RHS
✦ Try This: State true or false: (x - a)(x - b) = x² + (a - b) x + ab
Given statement is false,
Given, (x - a)(x - b) = x² + (a - b) x + ab
L.H.S = (x - a)(x - b)
By distributive property, we get
= x( x - b) - a( x - b)
= x² - bx - ax + ab
=x² -(a +b) x + ab
Here, R.H.S = x² + (a - b) x + ab
LHS ≠ RHS
