5x² + 13x + 8 = 0, find the roots of the quadratic equations by using the quadratic formula
Solution:
Given, the quadratic equation is 5x² + 13x + 8 = 0
We have to find the roots of the equation.
By using the quadratic formula,
x = [-b ± √b² - 4ac]/2a
Here, a = 5, b = 13 and c = 8
b² - 4ac = (13)² - 4(5)(8)
= 169 - 160
= 9
x = [-13 ± √9]/2 (5)
x = [-13 ± 3]/10
Now, x = (-13+3)/10 = -10/10 = -1
x = (-13-3)/10 = -16/10 = -8/5
Therefore, the roots of the equation are -8/5 and -1
