30 persons can reap a field in 17 days. How many more persons should be engaged to reap the same field in 10 days?
Solution:
No. of persons No. of Days required to reap the field
30 17
x = ? 10
It is obvious that more people can reap the field in less time, and it is an inverse variation.
x = 30 × (17/10)
x = 3 × 17
x = 51 persons
Hence 51 persons will reap the field in 10 days. Therefore 34 more people should be engaged to finish the job in 10 days.
✦ Try This: 50 persons can reap a field in 18 days. How many more persons should be engaged to reap the same field in 12 days?
No. of persons No. of Days required to reap the field
50 18
x = ? 12
It is obvious that more people can reap the field in less time.
x = 50 × (18/12)
x = 25 × 3
x = 75 persons
Hence 75 persons will reap the field in 12 days. Therefore 25 more persons should be engaged to finish the job in 10 days.
