2/5 of the total number of students of a school come by car while 1/4 of students come by bus to school. All the other students walk to school of which 1/3 walk on their own and the rest are escorted by their parents. If 224 students come to school walking on their own, how many students study in that school?
Solution:
Let x be the students that come to school by walk
Given 224 students come to school by walking on their own
Applying our knowledge on fractions, we compute as follows.
x/3 = 224
x = 224 × 3 = 672
2/3 walk with their parents = 2/3 × 672 = 2 × 224 = 448
Let the total students studying in the school be S
2S/5 + S/4 + 672 = S
672 = S - S/4 - 2S/5
672 = 3S/4 - 2S/5
672 = (15S - 8S)/20
7S/20 = 672
S = 13440/7 = 1920
There are 1920 students studying in that school
✦ Try This: 1/4 of the total number of students of a school come by car while 1/4 of students come by bus to school. All the other students walk to school of which 1/2 walk on their own and the rest are escorted by their parents. If 300 students come to school walking on their own, how many students study in that school?
