Solution:
From the above question, we have the linear equations as,
1/2x - 1/y = -1---------------(1)
1/x + 1/2y = 8------------------(2)
Consider
u = 1/x
v = 1/y,
Rearranging the above equation, we get,
u - 2v = -2-------------------(3)
2u + v = 16------------------(4)
Let us solve equations (3) and (4)
Multiplying (4) by 2 and Adding with (3), we get,
5u = 30
u = 6.
Substituting the value of u in (4),we get,
2 x 6 + ν = 16
ν = 16 - 12 = 4
ν = 4.
x = 1/u = 1/6
y = 1/v = 1/4
x = 1/6
y = 1/4
Therefore, the values of x and y are 1/6 and 1/4 respectively.
