Average Value and Calculation
Average value is used to represent numbers in the given data set. It is a numeric value that can be used to show a large amount of data. It helps represent the middle value of the numbers in the given data set. In this lesson, we will learn to determine the value of the average for the given data. Stay tuned to learn more!!!

Average Value
The average value can be found by dividing the sum of all observations in a given data set by the total number of observations. It is found using the formula:
This formula is common in every situation when we calculate the average value. For example, finding the average number of students in a school, the average amount of money an individual earns in a town and average temperature of any location. Representing the average values of such quantities makes it possible to represent them as a single value.
Average Value Calculations
The steps to determine the average value are:
- Find the sum of all the observations in the given data set.
- Check the number of observations.
- Determine the average value by using the formula: average = sum/count
Let us see an example to understand better.
There are 5 children having heights, 150 cms, 160 cms, 172 cms, 180 cms, and 165 cms. The average height of children is given by using the formula, Average = Sum of all observations/Total number of observations.
- Sum of heights of children = (150 + 160 + 172 + 180 + 165) cms = 827 cms
- Number of children = 5
- Thus, the average height of children = 827cms/5 = 165.4 cms which are approximately equal to 165 cms.

Example 1: The average weight of 6 boys is 55 kgs. The weight of 5 boys is, 53 kgs, 55 kgs, 57 kgs, 52 kgs and 54 kgs. What is the weight of sixth boy?
Solution: Average weight = 55 kgs
Let the weight of sixth boy is x kgs.
Average weight = Sum of all weights/total number of boys = (53 + 55 + 57 + 52 + 54 + x)/6 = 55
\(\implies\) (271 + x) = 330
\(\implies\) x = 330 - 271 = 59 kgs
\(\therefore\) The weight of the sixth boy is 59 kgs. -
Example 2: If the average of 7 numbers is 20. If one number is excluded, the average is reduced by 10. Find the excluded number.
Solution: Average of 7 numbers = 20
Average = Sum/count
Sum of 7 numbers = 20 × 7 = 140
Let y be the number excluded.
Then average = sum/count = (140-y)/6
10 = (140 -y)/6 ⇒ 140 - y = 60
y = 140 - 60 =80
\(\therefore\) The excluded number is 80.
