Scientific Notation Calculator
Scientific notation Calculator helps to express a given number using scientific notations. Scientific notations provide us with a way of expressing very large or very small numbers easily. It makes use of the decimal form as well as powers of 10 to represent the number.
What is a Scientific Notation Calculator?
Scientific Notation Calculator is an online tool that helps to calculate the scientific notation of a given number by using decimals as well as powers of 10. If the number is very large the exponent (or power of 10) is positive. However, if we have a small number the power of 10 is negative. To use this scientific notation calculator, enter the value in the input box.

- Step 2: Enter the number in the input box of the Scientific Notation Calculator.
- Step 3: Click on the "Calculate" button to find the scientific notation.
- Step 4: Click on the "Reset" button to clear the fields and enter new values.
How Does Scientific Notation Calculator Work?
A very large or small number can be expressed by using scientific notations. However, some rules need to be followed in order to use scientific notation. These are given as follows:
- Rule 1: Suppose we have a large number that is greater than 1. We then move the decimal point to the left and the power of 10 is positive.
- Rule 2: Suppose we have a small number that is lesser than 1. The decimal point is shifted to the right and the power of 10 is negative.
Given below are the steps to represent a number using scientific notation.
- The decimal point needs to be moved until there is only one non-zero digit to the left of the point. This number is denoted by c.
- Now count the number of places the decimal point was moved. This is represented by n.
- If the decimal was moved to the left n will be positive. This indicates the number is large.
- If the decimal was moved to the right n will be negative. This shows that the number is small.
- Now substitute these values in the formula c × 10n to get the scientific notation.
Solved Examples on Scientific Notation Calculator
Example 1:
Find scientific notation for 0.00748 and verify it using the scientific notation calculator.
Solution:
Move the decimal point to the right of 0.00748 up to 3 places.
c = 7.48
n = -3 (as decimal was moved to the right, hence, n is negative)
According to the formula: c × 10n
Therefore, the scientific notation for 0.00748 is 7.48 × 10-3
Example 2:
Find scientific notation for 7485 and verify it using the scientific notation calculator.
Solution:
Move the decimal point to the left of 7485 up to 3 places.
c = 7.485
n = 3 (as decimal was moved to the left, hence, n is positive)
According to the formula: c × 10n
Therefore, the scientific notation for 7485 is 7.485 × 103
