How to Order Decimals?
Case 1:
If the numbers before the decimal point are not the same for all the decimal numbers, then they can be compared easily. For example, to compare 12.45, 9.45 and 11.45, we can easily find that 12 is the greatest of all the numbers and accordingly we arrange the other numbers.
Case 2:
If all the numbers have the same digit before the decimal point, then we look at the number after the decimal point and find which decimal number has the greatest digit. That will be the greatest number in the set. For example, to compare 12.45, 12.36 and 12.23, we check the digits given after the decimal and we see that 12.45 is the greatest of all and accordingly we arrange the other numbers.
Let us understand how to order a set of decimals by looking at a solved example.
Solved Examples on Ordering Decimals Calculator
Example 1:
Arrange the following decimals in ascending order.
5.23, 3.45, 1.5, 6.83, 0.27
Solution:
We see that all the decimals have different numbers before the decimal point. Hence we compare the numbers before the decimal point and a rrange them in ascending order as follows.
Ascending order of the decimals is,
0.27, 1.5, 3.45, 5.23, 6.83
Example 2:
Arrange the following decimals in decending order.
7.23, 4.35, 4.6, 8.93, 0.47
Solution:
We see that all the decimals have different numbers before the decimal point. Hence we compare the numbers before the decimal point and a rrange them in decending order as follows.
Decending order of the decimals is,
8.93, 7.23, 4.6, 4.35, 0.47
Example 3:
Arrange the following decimals in ascending order.
11.73, 1.25, 1.5, 4.74, 6.86
Solution:
We see that all the decimals have different numbers before the decimal point. Hence we compare the numbers before the decimal point and a rrange them in ascending order as follows.
Ascending order of the decimals is,
1.25, 1.5, 4.74, 6.86, 11.73
