How to Find the Nearest Whole Number?

To find the nearest whole number of a decimal number, we need to look at the tenth place digit, which is the digit just after the decimal point. If that digit is equal to 5 or greater than 5, we add 1 to the ones place digit of the number and remove the decimal part of the number. However, when that tenth place digit is less than 5, we keep the digit at ones place as it is and remove the decimal part. Let us understand this better with the help of an example.

Solved Examples on Nearest Whole Number Calculator

  1. Example 1:

    Round off 34.78 to the nearest whole number.

    Solution:

    In the number 34.78, tenth place digit= 7, the digit at ones place = 4. 

    Now, we can see that the tenth place digit, i.e., 7 > 5, so we increase the ones place digit by 1 (4 + 1 = 5). 

    Therefore, 34.78 rounded off to the nearest whole number is 35.

  2. Example 2:

    Round off 46.37 to the nearest whole number.

    Solution:

    In the number 46.37, tenth place digit= 3, the digit at ones place = 6. 

    Now, we can see that the tenth place digit, i.e., 3 < 5, so we keep the ones place digit as it is.

    Therefore, 46.37 rounded off  to the nearest whole number is 46.
