How to Find Factor By Grouping?
Follow the steps mentioned below to factorize a polynomial.
- Factor out if there is a factor common to all the terms of the polynomial.
- Identify the appropriate method to factorize the polynomial. You can use regrouping or algebraic identities to find the factors of the polynomial.
- Write polynomial as the product of its factors.
Solved Example:
Find the factor by grouping for polynomial 16xy + 16y + 32x + 32
Solution:
4 is a single factor common to all the terms of this polynomial.
= 16xy + 16y + 32x + 32
= 4(4xy + 4y + 8x + 8)
Here, we will do factoring polynomial by grouping.
Let us write 4xy + 4y and 8x + 8 in the factored form separately.
4xy + 4y = 4y( x + 1)
8x + 8 = 8(x + 1)
So, 16xy + 16y + 32x + 32
= 4(4xy + 4y + 8x + 8)
= 4(4y( x + 1) + 8(x + 1)) which is factored form.
Similarly, you can try the calculator to find the factor by grouping for
1) x4 - 4x2
2) x2y2 + y4
