How to Divide Decimal Numbers?
A decimal number is a number which has two parts-the whole number part and a decimal part (the digits after the decimal point). In order to divide decimal numbers, we need to check for the number of digits after the decimal. For example, to divide 45.63 by 7.54, we first check the divisor, which is 7.54. We change the divisor to a whole number by moving the decimal point 2 places to the right, which makes it 754. After this, we move the decimal point of the dividend with the same number of places to the right, which makes it 4563. Now, both the decimal numbers have been changed to whole numbers and are divided like regular division which gives the answer as 6.052.
Solved Example:
Divide: 4.273 ÷ 2.243
Solution:
First, we will change the divisor 2.243 to a whole number by moving the decimal point 3 places to the right. This will make it 2243.
Then, the decimal point of the dividend will also be moved to 3 places to the right. This will make the dividend 4273.
Now both the numbers will be divided like we do the regular division.
4273 ÷ 2243 = 1.905
Therefore, the answer is 1.905
Similarly,
- 3.45 ÷ 1.35 = 2.556
- 6.68 ÷ 4.03 = 1.658
Now, you can use the calculator and divide the following decimal numbers:
- 45.5 ÷ 33.5
- 10.98 ÷ 2.98
- 312.86 ÷ 42.9
