Absolute Value Calculator
Absolute Value Calculator is a free online tool that helps to find the absolute value of a given number. The absolute value represents the magnitude of a number without including the sign.
What Is Absolute Value Calculator?
Absolute Value Calculator computes the absolute value of a positive or a negative number. The absolute value of a number is represented by a modulus sign. Quantities like distance, time, price, etc., are always given by their absolute values. To use the absolute value calculator, enter the number in the given input box.

- Step 4: Click on "Reset" to clear the field and enter new values.
How Does Absolute Value Calculator Work?
The increase and decrease in certain quantities is sometimes given by a positive or a negative number. However, the absolute value only considers the numeric value of the given quantity and not the accompanying sign. The absolute value of a number can be thought of as the distance of that number from 0. As distance can never be negative hence, the absolute value of a number is always positive. Suppose we have a positive number x represented on a number line. The distance of x from 0 will be x units to the right of 0. Similarly, suppose our number on the number line is negative, i.e., -x. The distance of -x from 0 will be x units to the left of 0. Here, the distance x (always positive) denotes the absolute value of the numbers in both cases. The formal definition of the absolute value can be given as follows:
If we have a function f(x) = |x|, then we can say:
|x| = x, if x > 0 (x is positive).
and
|x| = -x, if x < 0 (x is negative).
Solved Examples on Absolute Value
Example 1: Find the absolute value of 25 and verify it using the online absolute value calculator.
Solution:
According to the formula,
|x| = x, if x > 0 (x is positive)
|25| = 25.
Hence, the absolute value of 25 is 25.
Example 2: Find the absolute value of -25.2 and verify it using the online absolute value calculator.
Solution:
According to the formula,
|x| = -x, if x < 0 (x is negative)
|-25.2| = -(-25.2) = 25.2
Hence, the absolute value of -25.2 is 25.2.
Now, use the online absolute value calculator and find the absolute values of the following numbers.
- 7.2
- -5.6
