A variable expression (or) an algebraic expression is a combination of terms by the operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, etc.

We can say that an expression is a random combination of numbers, variables, functions, etc. 

For example, 3x - 2 is an expression. 

While on the other hand, an equation means that two different expressions are connected to each other by an equal to sign in between, 

For example, 3x - 2 = 5 + x is an equation. 

Thus, expression is a random combination of numbers, while an equation has two different expressions connected to each other.
