Write the next three rational numbers to complete the pattern: 4/-5, 8/-10, 12/-15, 16/-20, __, __, _____.
Solution:
Given, the rational numbers are 4/-5, 8/-10, 12/-15, 16/-20
We have to find the next three rational numbers to complete the pattern.
From the pattern we observe that the denominator is a multiple of 5.
4/-5 = 4/(-5) × 1
8/-10 = 4×2 / (-5) × 2
If the numerator and denominator of a rational number are multiplied or divided by a non-zero integer, we get a rational number which is said to be equivalent to the given rational number.
On multiplying the numerator and denominator by 5,
4/-5 = 4 × 5 / (-5) × 5 = 20/-25
On multiplying the numerator and denominator by 6,
4/-5 = 4 × 6 / (-5) × 6 = 24/-30
On multiplying the numerator and denominator by 7,
4/-5 = 4 × 7 / (-5) × 7 = 28/-35
Therefore, the next three rational numbers are 20/-25, 24/-30 and 28/-35.
