Two years ago, Salim was thrice as old as his daughter and six years later, he will be four years older than twice her age. How old are they now
Solution:
Let us consider Salim age as x years
Let us consider his daughter’s age to be y years.
From the first condition,
Salim was thrice as old as his daughter two years ago
x - 2 = 3(y - 2)
x - 2 = 3y - 6
x - 3y = -4-----------(1)
From the second condition,
Salim will be four years older than twice her age six years later
x + 6 = 2(y + 6) + 4
x + 6 = 2y + 12 + 4
x -2y = 16 - 6
x - 2y = 10-----------(2)
Solve equations (1) and (2) now.
Subtract (1) from (2),
y = 14.
Substitute y in (2),
x - 2 x 14 = 10
x = 10 + 28
x = 38
So we get
x = 38
y = 14.
Therefore, Salim and his daughter’s age is 38 years and 14 years respectively.
