The population of a town was decreasing every year due to migration, poverty and unemployment. The present population of the town is 6,31,680. Last year the migration was 4% and the year before last, it was 6%. What was the population two years ago
Solution:
The present population of the town = 6,31,680
The present population is 4% less than the previous year’s population.
If previous year’s population is x then:
x - 0.04x = 6,31,680
0.96x = 631,680
x = 631,680/0.96
x = 658,000
Therefore the previous year’s population is 658,000
The population of 658,000 is less than the previous year population by 6%
If the previous years population is y then it decreases by 6% to result in a population of 658,000
Therefore we can write:
y - 0.06y = 658,000
0.94y = 658,000
y = 658,000/0.94
y = 700,000
Hence, the population two years ago was 700,000.
✦ Try This: The population of a town was decreasing every year due to migration, poverty and unemployment. The present population of the town is 864,800. Last year
the migration was 6% and the year before last, it was 8%. What was the population two years ago?
The present population of the town = 6,31,680
The present population is 4% less than the previous year’s population.
If previous year’s population is x then:
x - 0.06x = 8,64,800
0.94x = 8,64,800
x = 8,64,800/0.94
x = 920,000
Therefore the previous year’s population is 658,000
The population of 9,20,000 is less than the previous year population by 6%
If the previous years population is y then it decreases by 8% to result in a population of 920,000
Therefore we can write:
y - 0.08y = 9,20,000
0.92y = 9,20,000
y = 9,20,000/0.92
y = 10,00,000
Hence, the population two years ago was 10,00,000.
