The points P, Q, R, S, T, U, A and B on the number line are such that, TR = RS = SU and AP = PQ = QB. Name the rational numbers represented by P, Q, R and S.
Solution:
We use the concept of the number line, which represents the real numbers in increasing order from left to right.
Distance between U and T = 1 unit.
It is divided into three equal parts.
TR = RS = SU = 1/3
R = -1 - (1/3) = -4/3
S = -1 - (2/3) = -5/3
Similarly, AB = 1 unit
It is divided into three equal parts:
AP = PQ = QB = 1/3
P = 2 + 1/3 = 6/3 + 1/3 = 7/3
Q = 2 + 2/3 = 6/3 + 2/3 = 8/3
