The pie chart below shows the result of a survey carried out to find the modes of travel used by the children to go to school. Study the pie chart and answer the questions that follow.
(a) What is the most common mode of transport?
(b) What fraction of children travel by car?
(c) If 18 children travel by car, how many children took part in the survey?
(d) How many children use taxi to travel to school?
(e) How many of children are travelling?
Solution:
(a) From the pie chart, the largest sector with largest central angle is 120°
It represents bus transport
Hence, the most common mode of transport is bus.
(b) The central angle for car is 90° which is the one fourth part of total circle
Hence, 1/4th of transport is car
(c) Given 18 children travel by car, we know that one fourth of total children travel by car
Therefore, total children for survey are 4*18 = 72
(d) Children using taxi are 360° - (60° + 60° + 120°+ 90°) = 360°- 330°= 30°
30° is 1/12th part of 360°
1/12 × 72 = 6 children
(e) Total children surveyed =72
Children travelling by car , bus, cycle, taxi are x
Children by walking are (I.e 60/360 × 100) 16.66% of 72 = 12
Hence, children travelling = total surveyed- walking = 72 - 12 = 60 = x
Children travelling by car are 18
Children travelling by bus are ( 120/360 × 100) 33.3% of 72 = 24
Children travelling by cycle are (60/360 × 100) 16.66% of 72 = 12
Children travelling by taxi are 60 - (18 + 24 + 12) = 60 - 54 = 6
Approximately children travelling from car and bus are equal to total children travelling.
