The median of observations 11, 12, 14, 18, x + 2, 20, 22, 25, 61 arranged in ascending order is 21. Find the value of x.
Solution:
Given, the data is 11, 12, 14, 18, x + 2, 20, 22, 25, 61.
The median of the observation arranged in ascending order is 21.
We have to find the value of x.
When the given data is arranged in ascending (or descending) order, then the middle most observation is the median of the data.
The data in ascending order is 11, 12, 14, 18, x + 2, 20, 22, 25, 61
Number of observations, n = 9
If n is odd, then median = (n+1)/2 th term
Median = (9+1)/2 th term
= 10/2 th term
= 5th term
5th term = x + 2
So, x + 2 = 21
x = 21 - 2
x = 19
Therefore, the median is 19.
