The following observations are arranged in ascending order :
26, 29, 42, 53, x, x + 2, 70, 75, 82, 93
If the median is 65, find the value of x.
Solution:
It is given that
Number of observations n = 10 is even
We know that
Median is the mean of (n/2)th and (n/2 + 1)th observation i.e. 5th and 6th observation
From the data given
5th observation = x
6th observation = x + 2
So we get
Median = [x + (x + 2)]/2 = x + 1
Given
x + 1 = 65
x = 64
Therefore, the value of x is 64.
✦ Try This: The following observations are arranged in ascending order : 25, 28, 41, 52, x, x + 1, 72, 74, 81, 92
If the median is 40, find the value of x.
