The following are weights (in kg) of 12 people. 70, 62, 54, 57, 62, 84, 75, 59, 62, 65, 78, 60
(a) Find the mean of the weights of the people.
(b) How many people weigh above the mean weight?
(c) Find the range of the given data
Solution:
Given, the data is 70, 62, 54, 57, 62, 84, 75, 59, 62, 65, 78, 60
Arranging the data in ascending order, we get
54, 57, 59, 60, 62, 62, 62, 65, 70, 75, 78, 84
(a) We have to find the mean of the given data
We know, mean = sum of observations / number of observations
Sum of observations = 54 +57 + 59 + 60 + 62 + 62 + 62 + 65 + 70 + 75 + 78 + 84
= 788
Number of observations = 12
Mean = 788/12
= 394/6
= 197/3
= 65.6 kg
Therefore, the mean is 65.6 kg
(b) We have to find the number of people who weigh above the mean weight.
Mean weight = 65.6 kg
Now, weight above mean weight = 70, 75, 78, 84
Therefore, the number of people whose weight is above mean weight = 4
(c) We have to find the range of the given data.
We know that the difference between the highest and lowest observations in a given data is called its Range.
Highest observation = 84
Lowest observation = 54
Range = highest observation - lowest observation
= 84 - 54
= 30
Therefore, the range is 30 kg.
