The age of A is five years more than that of B. 5 years ago, the ratio of their ages was 3:2. Find their present ages.
Solution:
Given, the age of A is five years more than that of B.
5 years ago, the ratio of their ages was 3 : 2
We have to find the present ages of A and B.
Let the present age of B be x years
The present age of A is 5 + x years
Five years ago,
Age of A = (5 + x) - 5
= x years
Age of B = x - 5 years
According to the question,
x/(x - 5) = 3/2
2(x) = 3(x - 5)
2x = 3x - 15
By transposing,
2x - 3x = -15
-x = -15
x = 15
Now, 5 + x = 5 + 15 = 20 years
Therefore, the present ages of A and B are 20 years and 15 years.
