Study the layout given below in Fig. 9.58 and answer the question: Write an expression for the total area covered by both the bedrooms and the kitchen.
Solution:
Given, the layout represents two bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen and living room.
We have to write an expression for the total area covered by both the bedrooms and the kitchen.
We observe that bedrooms and the kitchen are in rectangular shape.
Area of rectangle = length × breadth
Considering bedroom 1,
Length = x m
Breadth = 5 m
Area of bedroom 1 = x × 5 = 5x m²
Considering bedroom 2,
Length = x m
Breadth = 5 m
Area of bedroom 2 = x × 5 = 5x m²
Considering kitchen,
Length = 15 - x - 2 = 15 - (x + 2) m
Breadth = 5 m
Area of kitchen = [15 - (x + 2)] × 5
= 15(5) - 5(x + 2)
= 75 - 5x - 10
= 65 - 5x m²
Total area covered by two bedrooms and the kitchen = area of bedroom 1 + area of bedroom 2 + area of kitchen
= 5x + 5x + 65 - 5x
= 5x + 65 m²
Therefore, the total area covered is (5x + 65) m².
