Some pictures (a) to (c) are given below. Tell which of them show:
i) 3 × 1/5 = 3/5
ii) 2 × 1/3 = 2/3
iii) 3 × 3/4 = \(2{\Large\frac{1}{4}}\)
Solution:
Matching can be done by comparing the fractions with the shaded areas of the pictures.
i) 3 × 1/5 = 3/5 matches with (c) since there are three squares and 1/5th part is shaded in all the 3 squares, 3 × 1/5 = 1/5 + 1/5 + 1/5 = 3/5
ii) 2 × 1/3 = 2/3 matches with (a) since there are two circles and 1/3rd part is shaded in all the circles, 2 × 1/3 = 1/3 + 1/3 = 2/3
iii) 3 × 3/4 = \(2{\Large\frac{1}{4}}\) = 9/4 matches with (b) since there are three triangles and 3/4th part is shaded in all the triangles, 3 × 3/4 = 3/4 + 3/4 + 3/4 = 9/4 = \(2{\Large\frac{1}{4}}\)
