Solve Q.1 of Exercise 3.1 by the method of substitution
Aftab tells his daughter, “Seven years ago, I was seven times as old as you were then. Also, three years from now, I shall be three times as old as you will be.” (Isn’t this interesting?) Represent this situation algebraically and graphically
Solution:
Let Aftab is x years old and his daughter is y years old
Given; Seven years ago,
x - 7 = 7 (y - 7)
x - 7y + 42 = 0 be equation 1
Three years from now,
x + 3 = 3(y + 3)
x - 3y - 6 = 0 be equation 2
From equation 2, we get
x = 3y + 6 be equation 3.
Substitute the value of x = 3y + 6 in equation 1.
(3y + 6) - 7y + 42 = 0
- 4y + 48 = 0
Adding 4y to both the sides we get
4y = 48
Divide both the sides by 4.
y = 12
Substitute the value y = 12 in equation 2.
x = 3(12) + 6
x = 42
