Ravi purchased 5 kg 400 g rice, 2 kg 20 g sugar and 10 kg 850g flour. Find the total weight of his purchases
Solution:
We use the concepts of decimals, unit conversion and addition to find out how far is Sunita’s school from her residence.
We know that,
Weight of rice purchased by Ravi = 5 kg 400 g
Since 1000 g = 1 kg,
400 g = 400/1000 kg = 0.4 kg
Therefore, weight of rice purchased by Ravi = 5 kg + 0.4 kg = 5.4 kg
Weight of sugar purchased by Ravi = 2 kg 20 g
Since 1000 g = 1 kg,
20 g = 20/1000 kg = 0.02 kg
Therefore, weight of sugar purchased by Ravi = 2 kg + 0.02 kg = 2.02 kg
Weight of flour purchased by Ravi = 10 kg 850 g
Since 1000 g = 1 kg,
850 g = 850/1000 kg = 0.85 kg
Therefore, weight of flour purchased by Ravi = 10 kg + 0.85 kg = 10.85 kg
We know that the total weight of Ravi’s purchases = Weight of rice purchased by Ravi + Weight of sugar purchased by Ravi + Weight of flour purchased by Ravi
= 5.4 kg + 2.002 kg + 10.85 kg
= 18.270 kg
Therefore, the total weight of Ravi’s purchases is 18.270 kg.
